Fiction that leaves
a question behind.

It begins with a draft written by a person. How many episodes, who moves through them, how it ends — the skeleton of the story is fixed by that draft, and every stage after it has to obey. Changing the episode count or the ending because it suits the production process is not something our rules allow.

From there we set down the world, the characters and the approach to narration as separate documents. We build the plot of the whole book, break it into a detailed blueprint for each episode, and only then start on the prose.

The finished draft is read by a reader deliberately kept separate from the one that wrote it. That reader's job is not to praise but to break. It has to name at least three structural defects; a report saying nothing was wrong is not accepted.

And the floor of quality is held by machines, not by good intentions. Padding, the consistency of numbers and facts, the arithmetic of elapsed time, the numbering and exposure count of every planted clue, tics of style — verification programs count all of it, and a manuscript that fails does not move on.

Once the Japanese is finished, the book is translated into English, Spanish and German. The translations are checked by the same kind of machinery.

We use AI to write the prose.

We do not, however, hand the work over to it. A person decides what is written, the rules of the process govern how it is written, and what comes out is examined by both machines and people. AI is not an automatic generator here; it is one tool inside that process.

Making a lot of books quickly is not the goal. A book a reader can finish, that leaves something behind once it is closed — that is the only thing we are trying to make.
